Guster Joins Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five For 'Last Summer On Earth 2013' Tour

On June 17th, Guster will join Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five for the Last Summer On Earth 2013 tour. A rollicking roadshow, Last Summer On Earth 2013 will hit 30 arenas and amphitheaters across the country, kicking off at the Verizon Theatre in Dallas, TX.

2012’s inaugural edition of Last Summer On Earth tour was listed amongst the top “ten hottest summer package tour of 2012” (Rolling Stone) and spotlighted by Entertainment Weekly on the “2012 Summer Must List.” Ryan Miller from Guster, Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds partnered with Rolling Stone for a video to announce the 2013 Summer tour.

Guster recently self-released Guster: Live Acoustic, a collection of live recordings from their 2012 acoustic tour. It’s been eight years since Guster released a proper live album - 2004’s Guster On Ice – and two years since their last studio album, Easy Wonderful. The sixteen tracks from Live Acoustic are a musical tribute to the varied faces and places that made last year’s travels one of the most remarkable in Guster’s impressive career.

“I guess we could have called it Live at Various Theaters,” says drummer Brian Rosenworcel, referencing the fact that the songs on the album were culled from many performances and not just one. “Actually, I wish we’d called it Live at Various Theaters. Is it too late to call it Live at Various Theaters?”

While the members of the band mainly stick to the acoustic guitars on Live Acoustic, the songs are fleshed out with Charlene Huang on violin and April Guthrie on cello – helping to bring out the parts and arrangements that have made Guster’s studio recordings such mainstays.

Guster's Ryan Miller Puts Composing Hat On For The Indie Flick 'Safety Not Guaranteed'

Guster's lead singer Ryan Miller has scored his first film, Big Beach Films' Safety Not Gauranteed, which The Huffington Post calls, "an indie score worthy of John Williams." The soundtrack for the film will be released on ABKCO Records on June 5, in advance of the film's opening in New York, LA, Portand and Seattle on June 8.

“I've been a full-time musician for the past 18 years and I can say, without exaggeration, that my involvement with Safety Not Guaranteed has been one of the true highlights of my career," noted Miller. “It's been an incredible and indelible experience watching something grow from the germ of an idea to a feature film that has gathered supporters, fans and believers every step of the way. I can't wait to see where this leads all of us -- the cast, the crew and myself -- I have a sneaking suspicion this may be one of those films we're still talking about years down the road.”

The film, starring Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson and Karan Soni, is directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Derek Connolly, who received the 2012 Sundance Film Festival’s Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for his screenplay. The film is produced by Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf, the production team behind the Academy Award winning Little Miss Sunshine, along with Stephanie Langhoof, Trevorrow and Connolly.

The track “Big Machine,” written by Miller, is performed in the film by Duplass’ character and the soundtrack album is bookended with a studio recording of the song by Duplass, an accomplished musician in his own right. Other soundtrack highlights include Guster’s “Architects And Engineers,” along with “She’s Bound To Get Hurt” by Philadelphia-based indie band Summer Fiction and The Hoppin’ Haole Brothers’ ukulele-powered “Litter Box Beach.” Also featured is “Hard On Your Man,” an unreleased track from Hearts On Fire, a band that included Bob “Woody” Trevorrow, the father of Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Tervorrow.
