Hey Ocean! Asks Fans To "Make A New Dance" Up For Fan-Inspired Music Video
A few months ago, Vancouver trio Hey Ocean! learned about a very special fan named Super Ben, a 2 year old boy battling cancer. Ben’s grandmother wrote to the band to say their music was keeping Ben and his family smiling and dancing through the tough times.
This wasn’t the first time the infectious Hey Ocean! had heard from fans about the impact of their music on their lives. "We've gotten a lot of marriage stories from fans," says bassist and vocalist Dave Vertesi. "One of our songs played while a couple walked down the aisle. Another woman recently told us that our music is the only thing that soothes her baby during crying fits. Our music encompasses these big moments for them, and that’s incredible."
Inspired by Super Ben and the rest of their fervent fanbase, Hey Ocean! teamed up with Switchcam, the social video creation platform, to invite fans to submit videos of themselves breaking out their hottest dance moves to album track “Make A New Dance Up.” Switchcam’s technology, which in the past had focused on collecting fan-sourced live concert videos, allowed Hey Ocean! to set up a video upload page to easily collect submissions from fans (here: http://bit.ly/WiGjlZ). The result was over 100 videos submitted by over 1000 people across the globe.
Brett Welch, CEO of Switchcam, was excited to push the platform in a novel direction. “We’ve worked with many artists on fan-sourced concert videos, as Switchcam makes it easy to collect videos from fans and then automatically sync and stitch them into one video.” Welch says. “Hey Ocean!’s idea to take the Switchcam platform global and use it to create an official music video by the fans, for the fans… we just got really excited. And the result is priceless; it’s so playful and fun. You can’t help but smile.”
Hey Ocean!—Vertesi, Ashleigh Ball [vocals/flute], David Beckingham [vocals/guitar]--are three mischievous personalities who, when combined, form a dynamic live presence that keeps concertgoers captivated and on their feet. The band has been building their fervent live following since 2008 with countless tours across their native Canada, sharing the stage with artists like Family of the Year, Cat Empire, Xavier Rudd and Bedouin Soundclash. Their electrifying live show has also wowed audiences at various festivals, including the Calgary Virgin Festival, Saskatoon Jazz Fest, Whistler Arts Festival and the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. They will return to the U.S. for an appearance at Summerfest, as well as various Warped Tour Dates across the country.
