Nneka Unveils "Soul Is Heavy" Official Video From Upcoming Album
Nettwerk-managed artist and award-winning songwriter Nneka recently unveiled the title video (above) from her upcoming album Soul Is Heavy. The artist has started to reveal information about this anticipated release, but the official release date has yet to be officially announced.
“One of the best soul singers to emerge in the past few years” - The Times
“Our girl Nneka is the greatest… this afro-soul rump-shaker is pure hotness” - Rolling Stone
Soul Is Heavy effortlessly balanced combination of hip-hop beats, reggae grooves, brass riffs and African-pop are the canvas for the motif of love, pain, politics and God. Respective albums have earned Nneka the moniker of 21st Century Soul for their sincerity and frankness and this, her third album, is no different. The album features guest collaborations with the likes of The Roots’ Black Thought and Ms. Dynamite and affirms her credentials as a fast-rising star of black-consciousness music.

Nneka’s natural energy channels hope and optimism throughout her writing (‘Shining Star’), but her steeliness and stark life observations are maintained (‘No Doubt’). But this isn’t an album that has to be pretentious to stand out. It is real, honest, true to itself and bursting with feeling.
‘Soul is Heavy’ is both affirmative and compelling in addressing the tough realities and uncomfortable truths of modern politics – both personal (‘Stay’) and international (‘Soul is Heavy’) - and adding credence to the Lauryn Hill / Eryka Badu references so often cited in comparison of her.
The album has once again been produced by close friend and co-writer DJ Fahot, and mixed by Tom Elmhirst and Philippe Weiss whose recent credits include Amy Winehouse, Adele, CeeLo Green and Wyclef Jean.
Recently Nneka has enjoyed huge UK success when her track, ‘Heartbeats’ was remixed by nu-champions of the drum & bass / dubstep scene, Chase & Status, racking up in excess of 2.5 million Youtube on its way to a top-20 chart UK placement.
Since the release of her last album, No Longer At Ease, Nneka has played over 150 shows in front of 500.000 people. Appearances at South by South West, Glastonbury and Newport Folk Festival are in addition to supporting Lenny Kravitz, Nas & Damian Marley (“Distant Relatives”), The Roots, Gnarls Barkley and a sought after slot on the David Letterman show.
