Matt And Kim Win MTV’s Breakthrough Video Award for “Lessons Learned” Video At 2009 VMA’s

Brooklyn's Matt and Kim were awarded MTV’s Breakthrough Video award for their “Lessons Learned” music video by the moon man himself, Buzz Aldrin, at last nights 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The band beat out a slew of well-known nominees in the category including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bat For Lashes, Cold War Kids, Passion Pit, Death Cab for Cutie, Gnarls Barkley and Chairlift among others. The award-winning video for “Lesson’s Learned” (featured above), which is off the bands current release Grand (FADER Label in US; Nettwerk Records in UK and Europe) features the duo taking a stroll through Times Square while disrobing in the middle of February.

“After all the convincing it took me to get Kim to strip in Times Square she's finally gonna trust me!,” says Matt Johnson of Matt and Kim. “Every time she questions one of my dumb ideas I'll say ‘But Kim, remember that time we won the VMA!’”

2009 has already proven to be an extremely amazing year for Matt and Kim. The duo released their sophomore album and FADER Label debut Grand in late January, and it has gone on to sell over 50,000 copies to date. In August, they made their late night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where they performed the hit single “Daylight,” a song that has sold an impressive 260,000+ copies alone. Matt and Kim’s music has also been featured in a number of venues, including national television spots and programs and EA’s NBA Live 10, FIFA 10 and The Sims 3 World Adventures soundtracks. Following the album’s release the duo embarked on an extensive tour through North America, South America, Europe and Australia where they performed night after night to sold out crowds before returning stateside to perform at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and the Outside Lands 2009 Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco.
