NW1 writer/producer Fredro has been busy this year lending his sought after skills to some of the hottest talent around.
Namie Amuro's "Hands On Me" (above) was co-writtend and produced by Fredro; the track is featured on her her latest album, Feel (Avex), which was the 2nd most sold album worldwide on release week, only being oversold by Jay Z. Of the track, music blog MuuMuse raves, "It’s a slick electronic banger, and totally nuts in all the best ways possible: Chaotic alarms, catchy chants, pounding drum bursts, stinging synthesizers and about a half-dozen dance floor breakdowns that sound like a broken electronic alarm clock being thrown into a washing machine."
Fredro is also behind up and coming R&B singer B Smyth's latest single "Vibe," which fittingly premiered on Vibe.com last month. The song will be featured on his upcoming release, B Smyth Presents: The Florida Files EP, out October 15th. Watch "Vibe" below.
Newcomers Run River North (formerly Monsters Calling Home) is set to release their self-titled debut on February 25, 2014 via Nettwerk Records. With only a 6-song demo, the band has already garnered a Jimmy Kimmel Live! performance, been shortlisted at Cannes Film Festival, performed at the Grammy Museum for its members, sold out LA’s famed Troubadour and garnered over 1.5 million YouTube views.
This past Saturday, Run River North was featured on NPR Weekend Edition with Scott Simon to discuss the various themes of hope, struggle and identity reflected on the album. All band members came from families who moved to Southern California from Asia, and the overlap of Asian and American folk is subtle, reflecting the hyphenated existence of the band members. "Our parents don’t have white collar jobs. My father worked at Wienerschnitzel; that was his first job when he came [to the US]. Our parents sacrificed their lives for us. I think that why there's such a strong sense of family in each of us. They wished for us to live the American Dream. And we finally find that in music,” says guitarist Daniel Chae. After a stripped-down, sold out debut North American tour in March, the ladies of BOY—Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass—return from Hamburg on October 1, and this time they are bringing the full band along for the ride. In anticipation of the tour, BOY has unveiled an official video for stand-out track “Oh Boy,” which premiered on Glamour.com, from their critically acclaimed debut full-length album, Mutual Friends.
Exploring BOY's avante-garde side, the video takes the viewer on a non-linear journey full of abstract imagery, and even some synchronized dance routines. Director Rafael Palacio Illingworth explains the idea behind “Oh Boy.” "The concept was built around the work of Mexican photographers Lola and Manuel Álvarez Bravo...high contrast black and white images that hint on the surreality of elements,” says Illingworth. “The idea was to create a collection of images that would then be edited in a fast paced, contemporary style to create a modern video with a classic feel. A sort of 'surreal pop.' I thought this would marry perfectly with the quiet modernity of the music of BOY."
Quotes From The Media About BOY And Debut Album Mutual Friends:
"BOY writes and sings tuneful, friendly, forthright pop-folk songs about life and relationships...cradled by melodies with a comfortable lilt and by Ms. Steiner’s sweet, unfailingly precise lead vocals…” -- The New York Times (live review)
"Great pop songs are boiled-down emotion -- a simple line or melody that says it all...Swiss-German duo BOY nails it with viral hit 'Little Numbers'...simple, catchy, effective."
-- Billboard Magazine
"It's just..so addictive." -- NPR All Songs Considered
“It’s the charm and the openness of the music of the Swiss-German duo Boy that have made their debut album Mutual Friends such a world-wide success.” WXPN The Key
"The next kick-ass girls: BOY. 'Little Numbers’ is as addictive as peanut butter M&M's."
-- Glamour Magazine "Next Big Thing" Issue
