Nettwerk congratulates management client Meaghan Smith on her big win over the weekend. The up-and-coming artist was shocked when she was called to the podium to accept the 2011 Juno Award as New Artist Of The Year. The award is in recognition of Smith's critically acclaimed major label debut The Cricket's Orchestra (Warner Music Canada /Sire Records). The announcement came during the 40th Anniversary Juno Awards broadcast live nationally from Toronto's Air Canada Centre on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

"A classy debut from a huge new talent" - *** ½ Globe & Mail

"Her songs are wry and retro, with wordplay harking back to Tin Pan Alley's heyday." - New York Times

Meaghan Smith has professed a particular fondness for the music of the early 20th century and her music is a unique spin on those sounds and melodies in which she finds her inspiration. But lest you think that the album is throwback to a forgone era, Meaghan's album features turntable flourishes from DJ Kid Koala alongside lush strings and mellotrons.

Nettwerk management artist Meaghan Smith's debut album Cricket's Orchestra received a fantastic review from New York Time's critic Jon Pareles in the Sunday, February 21 edition of the paper. Pareles writes, "Her songs are wry and retro, with wordplay harking back to Tin Pan Alley’s heyday: 'This stupid heart, this foolish thing/Failed me from the start, keeps malfunctioning,' she coos in 'Heartbroken,' as her airy voice belies the lyrics." Meaghan Smith To Release Full-Length Debut On October 6

The Cricket’s Orchestra, the full-length debut album from Nettwerk Management artist and acclaimed Canadian musician Meaghan Smith, will be released October 6 on Sire Records. This is the follow up to Smith’s  highly acclaimed 2008 EP The Cricket’s Quartet, which The Washington Post declared as “one of the best finds of late ’08.” The full-length album will be available as a Barnes & Noble exclusive as well as through all digital retailers. In celebration of the release, Smith will perform a special show at Los Angeles’ Hotel Café on October 5 (tour dates below). Click HERE to listen to Meaghan Smith's "Heartbroken."

The 11-track album was written in Smith’s home of Halifax, Nova Scotia and was recorded in Toronto with help from producer Les Cooper. The child of a piano-teacher mother and a bass-playing father, Smith devoured old musicals and animated films as a child and later fell in love with the jazz and big-band music of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s. Those early inspirations influenced the material featured on the album, as Smith says, “My music is modern vintage. The record incorporates a lot of instrumentation from older eras in the form of horns, strings and arrangements, but I also love DJs and their turntables.” These modern influences are reflected on the record through the use of turntables, omnichords, melotrons and optigons.
